Carius design number 201 - hard Chine sloop. Built in 1975 by shipwright Charlie Afford in Sidney, BC. Charlie ran Philbrooks boatyard until he retired in 2007. The vessel is thin cedar plank over oak ribs with spruce mast, LOA 21'6". Reconditioned by its owners after Charlie sold it and had regular hall-outs and upgradeds through 2011 when George A. Reynolds bought it and sailed it in local waters. Mawingu has a V-birth and two single berths, a double sink, marine heads, and space for a stove, Frank Carius. (as Told by himself) 1. He was captured by Americans during ww2. Taken to Florida in a prisoners' compound. 2. He aided the USA navy while a prisoner. 3. Asked to stay in USA at end of war but, was repatriated back to Europe. 4. Emmigrated to Vancouver Canada. 5. Designed mostly wood boats, but also some in steel and ferro-cement.
